How Social Media is Like Swimming

I’ve talked to several people over the past few days about who want to use social media, but aren’t fully committed.  If you are like them, you have your reasons — doubt, fear, confusion.  ”What if …?”  You’re approaching social media much like my kids approach a swimming pool

Standing on the edge of social media

You walk up to the edge and look in. You see all the other people in the pool, but you are a little hesitant. What if it is cold? What if I can’t swim well enough?  You know the feeling.  You dip your toe in and it’s colder than expected.  You back away and rethink the whole thing.  If you are like my kids, you eventually get your courage up and go back to the edge.  And, if you’re like my son, you dip your toe in again and slowly wade into the shallow end by the steps.  However, if you’re like my daughter, you walk up to the deep end and jump!

You can’t stay in the social media kiddie pool

When it comes to social media, you can’t stay in the kiddie pool.  It’s fine to start there, but you can’t stay there long. All the action happens in the deep end. So get ready, take a deep breath and jump in. It’s time to get your inner Aquaman on.

Do you need lessons?

Now if you have never been swimming, we don’t recommend you jumping in the deep end on your first trip to the pool.  Stand on the edge and watch for a bit if you want.  You may even want to take lessons.  But once you know the basics, and once you have put in some time practicing you need to start moving to deeper waters.

What depth are you swimming in when it comes to your social media presence?
